If we are to believe that Christ Jesus was and is the Word made flesh, and if we are to believe that the Holy Spirit was sent forth from Christ to His saints in the earth with the promise to reveal all things to us; then it is to our greatest benefit to know also that we can trust the written word of the Holy Bible to no less a degree.

I encourage any Christian reading this article not to fear, or to heed the lies of those who attempt to nullify the authority of the Bible with the claims of human errancy and interference. Simply trust that God Almighty is, and always has been, willing and able to speak perfectly through imperfect man. And regardless of how stubborn, innovative, devisive, conniving or any other negative thing sinful man may be. The sovereign will of God to reveal Himself to those He has chosen out of the world since the dawn of time, will never be thwarted by the will of man, no matter how hard he may try.

In the Bible, we have ONE revelation of God’s Word, that has been revealed progressively throughout history, and concluding with the revelation given to the apostles, that would finally make known to us the mysteries revealed and sealed up under the Old Covenant. It is not a library of letters and books, where we can pick and choose which are true and which are not. But it is ONE complete and sealed up revelation of God to His saints.

There is a main rule of thumb when seeking to interpret the truth of the Bible, and that of course is assuming that one is firstly a genuine believer, and sealed with the deposit of the Holy Spirit. That rule is to allow Scripture to interpret Scripture. This basically means that, when we are trying to understand some of the more unclear passages of the Bible, we must first seek other more clear passages to cast light upon them. Until we are finally able to form our theology upon what the Bible says as a whole, rather than taking a portion out of context. So providing we try and remember that the Bible is ONE complete revelation of God, as I said previously, then we are building from a safe foundation in our personal interpretation of His Word.

Another important thing to remember, which may seem a slight contradiction in itself, is to read it in the context it was written. Although the Bible is one complete revelation, nevertheless it is made up of works formed through the ages, and written in various styles. It may sound absurd, but many differences of opinion throughout church history, seem to happen when certain portions of Scripture are read differently than written. In some places such as the Psalms this is completely obvious. If we were to read them totally in a literal way, then we would expect to see trees clapping their hands all over the place, and many other bizarre things! So we must gather first the style of writing, and where something is unclear to us, as I said earlier, seek clarity from other areas of the Bible.

Finally I would like to point out the integrity of the Bible, and how it was formed. Never be afraid to allow the Bible to be scrutinized, for it will ALWAYS stand the test. Although many will ignorantly talk of this or that contradiction in the Bible, or attempt to cast doubt on the authenticity of certain letters or epistles etc., it is never with any basis in fact. The Bible has been scrutinized more than any other book written in all probablity, and has been found to stand the test to a far greater degree than many other works that are accepted as genuine completely. Also there is an excellent and concise article written by Henry Clarence Thiessen, which does a fantastic job of explaining the way in which the canon of the New Testament was formed, and can be downloaded here.

Such a conviction is the very antithesis of the post modern notion that no one should ever claim to know objective truth. And that is another major reason why Christianity has been targeted by the proponents of post modern inclusivism.

Authentic Christianity is “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Christian truth is not subject to change or amendment. It isn’t nullified by changes in worldly opinion or standards of political correctness. It doesn’t need to be adapted and redefined for every new generation.

The Battle for the Truth, Part 1

I had the opportunity to be part of a conference on the subject of The War on the Word and to address the issue of biblical truth and its attack by the enemy, Satan. And, of course, this is a great opportunity because this is such a critical issue to deal with.

What makes it important is the instruction of Jude verse 3, which say, “Earnestly contend for the faith, once for all, delivered to the Saints.” And the faith, once for all, delivered to the Saints is talking about the Scripture and the content of sound doctrine, the revelation of God committed to us. We are to earnestly fight for the faith, to contend for that faith. If we’re going to contend for the faith we need to understand where the battle is coming from.

A couple of weeks ago Tom Pennington gave me a quote from Martin Luther that I found very interesting. This is what Martin Luther said, “If I profess with the loudest and clearest exposition, every portion of the truth of God, except that little point, which the world and the devil are, at that moment, attacking. I am not confessing Christ. However, boldly, I may be professing him. Where the battle rages, said Luther, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved. And to be steady on all the battlefield, besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point,” end quote.

Luther was saying if you’re gonna call yourself a Christian then you have to fight the battle where the battle rages. And where it rages today, and I think all through history, is at the very point of the truth of Scripture.
